UHAS reaffirms partnership with the University of Leeds.

The Pro-Dean for International, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Dr. Piruthivi Sukumar from University of Leeds led a delegation to UHAS. The purpose of the visit was to follow up on the Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) which was signed in March this year on medical education, simulation, communicable and non communicable diseases, pharmacology, allied health sciences, public health, biomedical sciences, nursing, midwifery and mental health.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lydia Aziato alluded to the fact that, the follow up from the delegation shows the commitment and joint effort attached to the mutual relationship between UHAS and University of Leeds. She said, “we are very open to the diverse subject areas of this collaboration.”
In order to have medical education as a skill to improve the health sector, Professor Aziato stated that “we have a keen interest in mobility for students, faculty and staff for research, mentorship, exchange programmes and we are ready to have a joint partnership in the opportunities available at Leeds.”
Additionally, the Registrar Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni reiterated the fact that “there is the need for a two-way approach in capacity building, skills acquisition, knowledge and exposure for both faculty and staff of the University.”
Professor Ian Wood, Pro-Dean International, Biological Sciences, University of Leeds indicated that as collaborators, “we want to have a strategic collaboration in Ghana and since UHAS is in the health sector, we need to seize this opportunity.Therefore, we encourage faculty to reach out to us with their specific areas of research on fact findings.”
According to the Times Higher Education Student Experience, Leeds is the third largest University in the United Kingdom for student experience since its establishment in 1904 with over 300 and 200 undergraduate and Masters programmes respectively. Some of their research strengths include; translational and clinical research, dental educational research, dental public health and health service research, biomaterials and tissue engineering, biomineralization, microbiology and cell biology.
In attendance were Deans and Directors of the University who also engaged the delegation on their various subject areas and prospects that can be exploited by both parties. The team from University of Leeds was also accompanied by the West Africa Regional Manager, Mr. Oyedapo Oyeyemi.
