Teachers and pupils of the Yawhima Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Primary and Junior High School in the Sunyani Municipality have been ordered by the Chief of Yawhima community to vacate their classrooms amidst fear of respiratory infections as a result of dust emanating from the New-Dormaa-Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch.
Speaking in an interview with Mark Abissah, host of Suncity Morning Drive, Nana Ansu Ababio, the chief of Yawhima intimated that, the dust emanating from the road has become unbearable for the teachers and students hence the decision to close the school.
Nana Ababio added that, the school will remain closed until measures are taken to put the road in good shape to save school going children and residents along the stretch from the dust.
The school was closed on Monday 20th February 2023 and the children had since not resumed school.
This becomes the second time this year where school going children are being forced to abandon their classrooms as a result of the bad nature of the New-Dormaa-Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch.
Earlier this year, pupils of Kuotokrom Municipal Assembly A and B Basic Schools were forced to abandon their classrooms due to fear of contracting respiratory diseases as a result of the dust.
Meanwhile, there have been persistent calls on the government and the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to intervene for the speedy completion of the road.
The New-Dormaa-Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch is one of the busy roads in the Sunyani Municipality. The road links two capital cities of the Bono and Bono East Regions, Sunyani and Techiman respectively.
