Upper East: Director-General of Prisons pays courtesy call on Regional Minister.

The Director-General of Prisons (DGP), Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir, accompanied by the Director of Prisons(DOP) Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, at his residency in the regional capital, Bolgatanga.
According to Mr. Isaac Egyir, the visit which forms part of his tour to the prisons establishments in Northern and Upper East regions, was to pay homage to the Minister and also give him an insight into the programmes and activities of the Prisons Service, especially in areas of agriculture where the Service has a comparative advantage.
The DGP added that the Service was poised to leverage on its comparative advantage in agriculture to reposition the Service to become self-sufficient in feeding the inmates.
The UE Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu on his part expressed gratitude to the DGP for the visit, and described the region as one of opportunities and challenges.
According to him, the region is endowed with mineral resources such as gold coupled with vast and rich arable lands. ‘I see the viable agricultural activities the residents of the region engage in as opportunities whereas the challenges have to do with some conflicts and violence that we experience periodically as a result of chieftaincy issues and the porous nature of the borders the region shares with neighbouring countries, Burkina Faso and La cote d'Ivoire’, he added.
He commended the prisons administration, and the UE Prisons Regional Commander, ADP Yakubu Abugrago for the good working relationship they have enjoyed so far as well as his initiatives and reforms In the prisons within the region especially in the area of agriculture.
