Volta: Chiefs and people of Peki Wudome launch township road rehabilitation project.

The chiefs and people of Peki Wudome in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region have launched a Ghc3.3 million township road rehabilitation project at an impressive ceremony at Peki Wudome. The community initiative project is being funded solely by the citizens themselves at home and abroad through special levies and contributions. The project is expected to give a total facelift to Peki Wudome when it is completed by 2030.

Peki Wudome is one of the oldest and fast growing communities in the Volta Region. The community which is one of the seven (7) Peki Towns is also associated with a serene environment for tourism and agriculture amongst others.

The launching of the township road rehabilitation project would cover layouts and drains construction as well as bitumen surfacing of all the link roads of the entire community. The initiative was conceived by the Peki Wudome Development Council (PWDC) headed by the Dufia of the community, Togbe Keh Agbezorli IX. This follows an earlier layout plan initiated some years ago by the late Asafoatse Quashigah who was very passionate and instrumental in the unity and development of the community during his lifetime.

The sod-cutting ceremony for the official launch of the project was jointly performed by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Hon. Godwin Daadzawa and the Chief of the community who also doubles as the Benkumhene of the Peki Traditional Area, Togbe Keh Agbezorli IX.

The citizens at their 2nd Annual Luku Conference over the weekend at Peki Wudome, raised additional funds totaling some Forty Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc40,000.00) towards the project which commenced in 2019.

Togbe Keh Agbezorli IX used the occasion to appeal to all and sundry including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and corporate Ghana to support the community to realize its dream of modernizing Peki Wudome. He commended the citizens of Peki Wudome both at home and abroad for their sacrifices towards their community. He also lauded the Members and the entire Executive of the PWDC for their advice, vision and commitment which are all yielding fruitful results for the citizens of Peki Wudome.

Togbe Keh Agbezorli announced that plans are underway to also build a three-thousand (3000) capacity community centre in the near future. The Centre, he said would become a unique place for tourism as well as conferences and meetings in the Volta Region amongst others. The area, the Chief noted abounds in tourism potentials including waterfalls and caves which are also being given serious attention.

The Chairperson of the Council’s Infrastructure and Development Committee, Mrs. Gifty Quarm touched on the scope of work of the project, adding that it is being done in phases. According to her, even though the project is capital intensive and expensive, they are not leaving any stone unturned in realizing such a dream at the end of the day. 

Mrs. Quarm who is also an expert in General Construction and Real Estate Development, told our newsteam that each of the streets in the entire community has been valued in cost so as to enable interested persons or clan members to easily adopt and fund such aspects of the project where necessary.

The Co-ordinator of the PWDC, Mr. Kofi Sabon Asare said the levies and contributions of the citizenry have indeed moved the project to this far, adding that they would continue to knock at many doors including using their levies and contributions as collateral in order to raise some loans from the banks to fully execute the project which is dear to the hearts of all and sundry.

Mr. Sabon Asare was of the view that Peki Wudome would become a modern community full of a renewed life after the completion of the project.

Launching the initiative, the DCE for the area, Hon. Godwin Daadzawa lauded the chiefs and citizens of Peki Wudome for their enviable self-help spirit and urged other communities within and outside the district to emulate such visionary initiatives. According to him, for the people of Peki Wudome to initiate such a giant project on their own without governmental support means they are ready to take their destiny into their own hands.

Hon. Daadzawa described Togbe Keh Agbezorli IX and his Queenmother, Mama Woke I as visionary leaders, saying several communities would have fully developed into modern towns by now if many leaders had initiated similar laudable projects in their areas of jurisdiction. He pledged to support the project with an initial seed amount of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc5,000.00), redeemable within two weeks.

The launching durbar was attended not only by the indigenes of Peki Wudome but also friends and associates of the community from far and near. The occasion was used to raise additional funds to execute their road rehabilitation agenda.
