Volta: South Tongu MP supports residents of Gonu Tsinto and Abletorkope with a new Canoe.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the South Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Hon. Wisdom Mensah Kobena Woyome has presented a ten (10) sitter capacity brand-new canoe to the residents of Gonu-Tsinto and Gonu-Abletorkope, remote twin farming and fishing communities at a brief ceremony at Gonu Tsinto.
The donation was in response to an urgent appeal made by the residents to the office of the MP to replace the current canoe he donated to them a year ago which had become a death trap.

A canoe or boat is the only means of transport by which the people of the area particularly residents of the two (2) twin communities of Gonu Tsinto and Gonu Abletorkope can commute to their respective towns and beyond.
The creak is currently about 150 metres long. During the rainy season however, the river becomes 300 metres long due to floods and the rise in the water level in the area.

The canoe would also enable the inhabitants most of whom are farmers and fishermen to transport their farm produce such as fish, live animals including birds, vegetables, maize and the local mat to the Dabala, Sogakope and other major markets beyond the district for sale.

Making the presentation, MP Kobena Mensah Woyome urged the inhabitants to
take good care of the facility so as to prolong its lifespan. He lauded the efforts of the people of the area for their contribution to the South Tongu district local economy.
Mr. Woyome gave the assurance that he would continue to push for policies and interventions that would transform their lives for the better.

He recalled the untiring efforts made by the Atta Mills and Mahama administrations in the past to extend potable water, electricity, school and health infrastructure such as CHPS compounds to the area, assuring that a future NDC government would
continue its good works to further improve the lot of the people.

The Spokesperson for Togbe Egble IV of Gonu Abletorkope, Mr. James Abletor
received the canoe on behalf of the people. He was very grateful to the MP for the gesture and timely intervention, saying the canoe would go a long way to
positively impact their work as farmers and fishermen in the area.

Mr. Abletor expressed grave concern about the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the area which are destroying their farm produce, lands and fishing activities and
appealed to government and the security agencies in the area to urgently deal with
the situation before it gets out of hand.

The Spokesperson also appealed to government to urgently tackle their deplorable roads in the area notable among them being the Atravenu road which connects the twin communities.

According to him, during the rainy season which is fast approaching again, the roads become seriously unmotorable, making it very difficult for them either to transport goods and services out of the area or vice versa for their sustenance.
