Facts about the Konkomba People of Ghana and Togo.


Konkomba People can be found in Ghana and Togo, they are part of the Gur speaking people and also they can be found in Northern Region, Brong Ahafo and other regions with a significant populations in these regions including the Kara in Togo and Central Region.  
According to Anthropologist Joshua , their homeland is on the North West border area around Guerin, Yendi and into Present day Togo . Its claimed they originated from Yendi area and were driven north and south to their Present day location by the Dagomba People of Ghana, it is believed it took place around the early 1400s and 1500s. 
 They settled in Saboba, Zabzugu and Chereponi areas of Gold Coast Present day Ghana also Kidjaloum it is believed the Dagomba invasion drove them and they stayed in Yendi, Kabre and the Bekwon were around, Dagomba then rose and mounted the horses then Bekwon rose up and went across the rive it is said the Invasion took place in the early 16th Century during the reign of Naa Sitobu .
According to N. J.K Brukum , they came to settled in what is now Present day Ghana and Present day Togo it is said their origins are Unkown others claimed they were settlers in Gold Coast Present day Ghana from Present day Togo and occupied what is now Yendi and the Dagomba conquered them the Gonja it is said under Ndawuri Jakpa they defeated the Dagomba under Ya Na Darizogo, Salaga was a Slave trade zone and Konkomba were sold, chianed with the neck and exposed the whole day from morning till evening they were left hungry, weak by their Slave masters during 1732 - 1897 there were 1,000 Konkomba and others who died or were murdered in the Slave raids. 
 They grow crops such as yam, maize also known as corn, peanut also known as groundnuts and they performed a traditional dances such as Konkomba War dance, Funeral and Burial dance, Kinachuun dance and other dances.   
In their tradition their Ancestors are honored and demanded respects, sacrifices in return for withholding punishment each of them belong to a clan some of them go for fishing, they celebrate Yaw festival and other festivals it is said they were known for fomented trouble for the Colonial adminsitratin which inflicted pain and assassinated the German and British Soldiers.  
The Konkomba traditional helmet is made up of horns, leather, broad cloth and cowire shells, In 1957 they created Stamp print of the Konkomba helmet for post office services.  
Among the Konkomba in Togo , they carved wooden sculptures, In their tradition they pratice Indigenous Spirituality God or Supreme being is refered as Uwumbor he created humans and created both spirits and souls when a person is died the Soul returns back to Uwumbor and joined heirs with the Ancestors, they also have earth deity and in the market with defoliated baobab tree has a temple to honor the deity and the Ancestors. 
 As a way to show honor they have a seasonal agricultural activities such as making preparations of yam planting , corn sowing and for harvesting during Ceremonial activities considered to be ritual ceremony in Bwagbaln due to the condition they begin working on the field work over 20 elders take part in it the main lineages and clans from Bwagblan, Saboba, Yoborpu, Lagee, Nalongni, and Bwakul connected with the society or community.
And according to Edmund Yamba they were not engaged in a war or conflict with the Dagomba but rather feared the horses, the Dagomba were sucessful and empowered by the German Influnece as a result of the revolt against the Germans by the Konkomba and his father was three months before the Sagbeli War known as Cow War.
