Jasikan District GNAT holds Its Quadrennial Delegates Conference; Elects new executive officers

The Jasikan District branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held it’s 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference at the Jasikan College of Education Assembly Hall on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

The Conference, which was themed: GNAT @90 – Surviving As A Reliable And Vibrant Teacher Union In The 21st Century: The Role Of Members Amidst Technological Advancement, served as an avenue for which members of the Association were encouraged to get themselves abreast with enough knowledge in technology to aid them cope and fit in the world of technology.

Speaking to the media after the Conference, Mr. David Smiles Asempapah, the Jasikan District Chairman of GNAT made it known that, the theme is appropriate looking at the era we live in now.

The theme is in the right direction. Every now and then, teachers need information and mostly, they go to the internet cafe to access these information where they have to pay. With the government’s intervention of laptop for every teacher, teachers can access information wherever they are” he stated.

In a solidarity message the NAGRAT Zonal Executive at Jasikan said “GNAT is our mother union. NAGRAT will always be with GNAT as long as the welfare of teachers is concerned. We plead that, as teacher unions, we stop the power play and fight together as one. We need to come together and find means and ways of getting solution to the technological deficiency in our educational system” he said.

The Conference ended with election of new crop of leaders for the Association. Below is the list of the newly elected leadership of the Jasikan District branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

3. Madam Kusse Yayra – Treasurer

4. Mr. Nyame Charles – Trustee

5. Mr. Seebaway Abubakar – Youth Coordinator

6. Madam Maria Gorreti Adu-Foli – GNATLAS Coordinator

7. Mr. Agyadu Justice – Basic School Rep

8. Mr. Gyebi Joseph Anim – Education Rep

9. Mr. Kenneth Ackom – SHS/SHTS Rep

10. Mr. Entsie Maxwell – TVET Rep.

In his welcome address, Mr. Asempapah David Smiles, outlined some few achievements of the Association within the past two years.

 Speaking at the Conference, Madam Roselyn Kafui Ofori, the Director of Education for the Biakoye and Jasikan Districts urged teachers to upgrade their educational standards as soon as possible and involve learning of ICT in their courses since ICT is needed in the teaching of children.

The Guest speaker – Mr.  Attey Linus Cofie (Former Volta Regional GNAT Secretary) encouraged Members of GNAT to strive to be active participants in all activities of the Union and Employ available ICT tools to form network for information dissemination amongst members.

The conference was officially opened by Hon. Lawrence Aziale (District Chief Executive – Jasikan). In his address, he noted he is a  teacher and once a proud  member of GNAT. He also urged teachers to make use of modern methods of teaching.

In attendance were Mr. David Kattah (Volta Regional Chairman – GNAT) Mr.  Samuel Mawuena Cody (Regional Secretary, GNAT Volta) among other prominent individuals within the teaching fraternity in the Volta and Oti Regions.
